A Home in Vilnius Will Leave You Breathless

THE PROJECT: 
Valley Villa, Vilnius, Lithuania

Located at a former farmstead, the existing slope and all the trees in the property were preserved during the construction of this multi-awarded house. It “hangs” over a valley, with views enhanced by continuous windows.

The black-shale ground floor is partly hidden in the slope, giving prominence to the natural wood finish of the facade’s first floor and the roof. The resulting architectural silhouette is a sculptural yet unobtrusive addition to this sunny side of the valley.

By dividing the volume into micro-spaces, courtyards were created. All the main interior spaces have entrances into the courtyards that allow its residents to enjoy both the morning and afternoon sun.

THE STUDIO
Arches, Lithuania

Rolandas Liola, Arūnas Liola, and Edgaras Neniškis—all with either a master’s degree or doctorate from the Faculty of Architecture of Vilnius Gediminas Technical University—established Architektūros Estetikos Studija (later renamed Arches), a Lithuanian architectural studio, in 2002. The practice has completed projects in, among other countries, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, the Ukraine, Russia, Germany, and Montenegro.

AWARDS AND NOMINATIONS

  • "Best Individual House" and "Best Private Interior" at "Tendencies 2017,” organised by the Lithuanian architectural magazine NAMAS ir AŠ.
  • "Best Private Interior" at the contest "Interior of the Year/Golden Palette’16,” organised by Lithuanian interior design magazine Interjeras.lt.”
  • Nominated for “Building of the Year 2017,” houses category, organised by ArchDaily.
  • Nominated for the Lithuanian architecture review magazine Archiforma's 2016 awards.
  • Main prize, "Meter 1/5 meter" at the contemporary Lithuanian Architecture exhibition/competition “Žvilgsnis I Save 2015-2016.”
  • Awarded the Best Bnterior in the house category at "Mano Erdvė 2016," organized by the Lithuanian Architects Association and daily newspaper Lietuvos rytas.
